Customizing Your Kubb Game Pieces
by Chrysta Baker

Kubb Games are a fun and exciting outdoor game of strategy, skill, and luck which is quickly becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Kubb Games are simple to learn, easy to set up, and just plain fun to play. The great thing about the Kubb Game is the fact that it can successfully be played by small teens, teenagers, adults, and seniors with little adjustment to the basic format or rules of the outdoor game. In fact, people love their Kubb Games so much that many people now are customizing their own game pieces in order to set them apart from the everyday plain look of the basic Kubb Game set.

Decorating or customizing your Kubb Game set is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Because Kubb Game is a team sport requiring a minimum of two and a maximum of approximately 20 players, many people choose to start off by personalizing their own throwing batons. Kubb Game sets consist of 21 pieces, including one king, four corner sticks, six throwing batons, and ten kubb blocks. The throwing batons are long dowels that are thrown at the kubb blocks in an attempt to knock each one down. Some people like to use a particular throwing baton because it just feels right in their hands, so they personalize it in order to distinguish it from the other batons.

Decorating each of the six throwing batons can be a great family activity. Mom, dad, and the teens can all get together and personalize their very own Kubb Game batons in any way they like. This way each member of the family will feel like a part of the team and they will probably take pride in the fact that they have their very own hand decorated piece that can be used in every Kubb Game battle. Some families even display the winning baton in a prominent area of the home, such as the mantel or kitchen table, so they can bask in the glory of their Kubb Game win all week long.

You might also want to decorate or customize your entire Kubb Game set, especially if you will be using it in public tournaments where other Kubb Game sets will be used. At the Kubb Game World Championships in Gotland, Sweden, teams gather from around the world to participate in a day of exciting Kubb Game tournament play. At the tournament you will find a wide variety of handmade, hand decorated, and uniquely personalized Kubb Game sets. Teams travel from around the world, including the United States, England, Italy, Germany, and Japan, in order to compete in the tournament. Many of them bring with them their very own personalized sets representing the countries they are from or their own personal interests. Most teams paint their Kubb Game sets to resemble the flags and colors of their home countries. Vendors are even set up that sell uniquely decorated Kubb Game sets. You can find Kubb Game sets decorated with cow spots, professional team logos, polka dots, skulls, cartoon characters, and any number of other decorating themes.

You can decorate or customize your own Kubb Game set in a variety of different ways. Kubb Game pieces are always made of some type of hard wood, such as oak or pine, so this makes it very easy to decorate using a variety of mediums. Most people choose to paint their Kubb Game pieces because it is a quick and easy way to customize their pieces. You can use just about any kind of paint, including water-based or oil-based. Water based paints will go on your pieces easily and dry quickly, but they will chip and fade during game play because you will be throwing them at each other. If using a water-based paint you might want to coat your Kubb Game pieces with a clear lacquer after the paint dries thoroughly. This will protect your painted design longer, especially if the pieces are used frequently.

When using an oil-based paint, make sure to always paint your pieces outside or in a well ventilated area because oil-based paints create stronger fumes and take much longer to dry than water-based paints. While oil-based paints will last longer, they are more difficult to apply and the drying time can take several hours or days depending on the temperature, ventilation, and humidity.

You might also want to stain your Kubb Game pieces for a more classic look and longer lasting results. If you do choose to use stain you need to first sand down each of your Kubb Game pieces lightly with a sheet of sandpaper. Most Kubb Game sets are coated with a glossy finish in order to protect the wood from moisture. Stain needs to soak into the wood, so you need to remove this glossy finish or the stain will not work. Even if your Kubb Game set is not coated in a glossy finish, it is a good idea to run some sandpaper over the pieces in order to make it easier for the stain to penetrate the wood grain. Use different shades of stain in order to give your set a decorative and unique look. You can use painters tape to create stripes or other designs using light, medium, and dark stain finishes. Stains also come in different colors, so feel free to get creative. Staining your Kubb Game set will give it a durable and decorative look with a classic appeal.

You can also add little decorative accents to your customized Kubb Game pieces by creating designs using wood burning, etching, carving, or even laser created images. Teens will have fun personalizing their Kubb Game pieces with beads, glitter, colored markers, or anything else you can come up with. In the end, everyone will have just as much fun decorating their Kubb Game pieces as they do playing it.
