Getting Ready for a Kubb Games Tournament
by Chrysta Baker

The wooden game of Kubb is a great outdoor game that is being played in backyards, parks, and schools by ordinary people around the world. The thousand year old Viking game that is popular throughout Sweden and the rest of Europe is now sweeping through the United States and becoming a popular outdoor game played by both the young and the old. As Kubb Game increases in popularity and more and more people become familiar with how to play this simple, strategic outdoor game, the need for tournaments is increasing. Kubb Game is one of those games that you want to share, play, and compete with others. So, once you have been bitten by the Kubb Games bug, you may want to organize your very own Kubb Games tournament. This is a great way to spread the joy of Kubb Game, meet new people, and participate in a fun and exciting competition that everyone can enjoy. So, if you are ready to throw your own Kubb Games tournament you might want to consider some of these tips to make it a successful and fun day for all.

First you will want to advertise your Kubb Games tournament using advertising, word of mouth, or the local media. If you are just going to have a small Kubb Games tournament amongst a few close friends, then a standard invitation to the event will do. On the other hand, if you are planning on putting together a Kubb Games tournament that will attract people you do not know, then you will want to advertise using fliers, posters, or advertisements. You might be a school administrator who wants to put together a Kubb Games tournament between students, so you would want to advertise within the school by putting up posters, visiting the different clubs, or adding it to the lineup of activities on a sporting day. Perhaps you just want to get people in your local community interested in Kubb Games by arranging a Kubb Games tournament in the local park. You might want to place ads in the neighborhood newsletters, advertise with the county park system, or call local groups such as the Boy Scouts, YMCA, or church organizations to drum up excitement about your Kubb Games tournament. No matter what you do, make sure you get the word out so people will actually show up for your Kubb Games tournament.

You might want to consider setting up a Kubb Games website or webpage on a social networking site, such as MySpace, Facebook, or a local organizational site. Setting up a Kubb Games tournament website is a great idea, especially if you want to attract people in the local community. Kubb Game teams can go to your website, register for the tournament, and find out more information about playing Kubb Games. You can also post pictures and results statistics online after the Kubb Games tournament ends. If you register and create your own Kubb Games website, consider selling local advertising on the site to help offset any costs you might have.

On the day of the Kubb Games tournament, make sure you get there early and have plenty of help to assist you with getting ready for a day of fun and competition. If your Kubb Games tournament will be held in a public park, make sure ahead of time that you will have enough room for the Kubb Games field or fields to be set up and plenty of space for spectators to watch from the sidelines. You will also want to set up your Kubb Games tournament in an area that is visible and accessible to people passing by so that they too can learn about the wooden game and even join in on the fun if they desire. While Kubb Games can be played just about anywhere, it is most desirable to find a location that is soft and flat, such as on grass, dirt, or sand. Kubb Games can be played on harder surfaces, such as concrete, but the wooden pieces tend to bounce harder and hit the ground louder so it is not recommended.

The Kubb Games field can be set up into just about any size depending on the ages of the players or how much space you have to work with. Most Kubb Games are set up somewhere between 4 by 6 meters and 8 by 10 meters, however the average playing field is usually around the middle at about 5 by 8 meters. It is up to you how big or small you want your Kubb Games tournament field to be. If you are expecting a large turnout of Kubb Game teams, you will probably want to set up multiple playing fields at the tournament. You might also want to set up several other Kubb Game fields that will not be used during the tournament itself, but can be used by others interested in learning how to play the outdoor game. Having an instructor teaching teens and adults how to play Kubb Game is a great way to get people involved and interested in joining a Kubb Game team.

Setting up the Kubb Games field is easy. Using the four corner markers, you measure out the playing field and hammer in the stakes into the ground delineating the Kubb Games playing area. It might be helpful, especially if more than one Kubb Games field will be used, to measure out string to the exact width and length of the playing field ahead of time to assure that each one is equal in size. Tie these strings to the four corner markers and stretch them as far as they can go to quickly and easily mark off the Kubb Games area. You can also use marking spray paint to indicate where the corner markers are to be placed when setting up multiple playing fields.

Once you have all of your Kubb Game pieces set up on the playing field, it is time to start the tournament and have some good old fashioned Viking fun. You might want to give prizes or medals to the winning team members and can even hold a ceremony for the top three winning Kubb Game teams. Encouraging each team to wear uniforms, costumes, funny hats, or other types of whimsy is all a part of the Kubb Games experience. Remember, Kubb Game is fun, relaxing, and highly social, so try not to take your Kubb Games tournament too seriously and just make sure that everyone enjoys themselves while spreading the Kubb Games word.
